What is a Skilled Worker Visa?

The Skilled Worker Visa is a sponsored visa route that allows foreign professionals to work for a UK employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence. It is designed for occupations listed on the UK Shortage Occupation List or jobs meeting the updated salary and skill threshold requirements as of 22 July 2025.

  • Visa Duration: Up to 5 years (extendable).
  • Path to Settlement: Eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years.
  • Family Sponsorship: Applicants can bring dependents (spouse & children).

Skilled Worker Visa Requirements

To be eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa, the applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Job Offer from a UK Sponsor – The employer must hold a valid Sponsor Licence and issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).
  • Eligible Job Role – The role must meet degree-level (RQF 6) skill criteria unless on the Temporary Shortage List (TSL) valid until the end of 2026. Transitional protections apply to current visa holders in lower-skilled roles (RQF 3–5).
  • Salary Threshold
    • £41,700 per year or £17.13 per hour (whichever is higher).
    • Lower salary bands apply to certain categories such as STEM/PhD holders and new entrants.
      • English Language Proficiency – The applicant must prove English proficiency through an approved test or qualifications from an English-speaking country.
      • Financial Requirement – Must show at least £1,270 in personal savings unless the employer provides financial support.
      • Note on Care Worker Roles – As of 22 July 2025, new overseas applications for care roles (SOC codes 6135/6136) are no longer accepted. Existing visa holders can still extend, switch sponsors, or bring dependents.
